About the Role
Reporting to the Senior Director, Tax, the Manager, Income tax is an integral part of the Tax team, focusing on corporate tax compliance and the tax accounting functions for Canada and US, and supporting the Senior Director, Tax in the various tax planning and other tax projects. The Manager, Income tax also deals with international compliance matters, as applicable. The functions relate to the operating entities as well as the family office holding companies. Knowledge of income tax and tax accounting standards applicable to private operating and holding companies is a must.
Responsibilities
Strategic
- Coordinate, plan, oversee and optimize the annual income tax, partnership, trust and non-profit filings.
- Coordinate the design and implementation of process improvements and best practices.
- Partner with leaders and stakeholders in various departments and participate in cross-area/function projects such as system implementation.
- Improve, develop and maintain procedures and internal controls surrounding the various tax processes.
Operational
- Responsible for the preparation, review and presentation of the annual personal, corporate, partnership and trust returns of the organization in both Canada and the US of both operating and investment holding companies.
- Responsible for making/coordinating tax instalments for Canada and US and for the holding companies
- Preparation of Canadian and US annual tax provision, including updating for Notice of Assessments received, instalments, etc.
- Preparation and review of various information returns (T4A-NRs, certain T4s, T5s, calculation of taxable benefits, etc.)
- Participate and plan annual dividend and retirement planning for executives of Team One and Family office, including preparation of related tax elections.
- Participate, question and validate all professional service invoices to ensure appropriate use of resources and that such services have a value-add to the organization and are in line with budget.
- Provide technical accounting guidance on subjects such as withholding taxes, non-resident filing requirements, taxable benefits, tax treatment of various expenses and specific reporting and filing requirements associated with local and international taxes.
- Identify, assess, and manage risks within your area of expertise to ensure that Aldo achieves its financial goals.
- Foster and participate in a culture of risk awareness by promoting best practices in risk management.
- Coordinate income tax audits with various tax authorities and prepare and provide backup and explanations as needed.
Leadership
- Lead, coach and support the senior tax analyst and other tax associates.
- Responsible for continued development of these associates.
- Provide resources, information, communication and practical advice to enable teams to accomplish goals.
- Establish clear priorities and objectives to achieve common goals.
- Highlight and recognize the success of the associates.
- Foster collaboration and cooperation with other teams and departments.
- Respect diversity and encourage equality.
- Guide and advise the Family Office Team
- Provide growth opportunities for associates to encourage them to excel and reach higher goals
- Ensure the compliance of all statutory requirements with the policies, procedures, governance and ethical standards set by The Aldo Group.
- Be a source of technical knowledge to other Business units and operate in a responsible and timely manner.
- Responsible for keeping position profile up to date.
- Responsible for preparing self-assessment as part of the yearly performance review process.
- Participates in annual personal objectives setting.
Qualifications
- CPA designation required; CPA Canada In‑Depth Tax Course and/or Master of Tax strongly preferred
- 3–5 years of progressive experience in income tax, including a minimum of 2 years in a people management role
- Experience in a large, multi‑entity and international environment, including private operating and holding companies
- Strong expertise in Canadian and U.S. corporate income tax compliance and tax accounting
- Extensive experience dealing and negotiating with tax authorities
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and strong working knowledge of Taxprep and Microsoft Office
- Strong organizational and leadership skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced environment
- This position requires fluency in both French and English as it involves communication with external stakeholders based outside of Quebec.
